If You’re Employed by an Organization
- Download a W-4 form. Complete Step 1 of the form. Remember your filing status (single, married filing jointly, or head of household).
- Update your deductions on line 4b using this formula: Total Yearly Income — Standard Deduction = Number on line 4b.
- The standard deduction is based on your filing status for tax year 2025 ($15,000 for single filers, $30,000 for married filing jointly, and $22,500 for heads of household).
- Send your updated and completed W-4 form to your employer.
If You’re Self-employed
- Determine how much you’re likely to owe for Federal Income Tax, Social Security, and Medicare.
- Subtract the standard deduction and yearly contributions to Social Security and Medicare from your estimated Total Yearly Income.
- The standard deduction is based on your filing status for tax year 2025 ($15,000 for single filers, $30,000 for married filing jointly, and $22,500 for heads of household).
- Adjust your withholding on your Form 1040 (example from 2024) to lower your federal tax withholding.
If You’re a Retiree
- Do you get disbursements from your retirement account? Reach out to the organization that disburses your retirement funds to ask how to change your tax withholding. You may receive a W-4P to adjust your income tax withholding.
- Update your deductions on line 4b using this formula: Total Yearly Income — Standard Deduction = Number on line 4b.
- The standard deduction is based on your filing status for tax year 2025 ($15,000 for single filers, $30,000 for married filing jointly, and $22,500 for heads of household. seniors over age 65 may claim an extra deduction of $2,000 for single filers and $1,600 for joint filers).
- Send your updated and completed W-4P form to the disburser of your retirement account.
